I'll note that I only got through 50% of this book and stopped reading I found it interesting how very self-centered our hero was, and then the heroine was also equally self-centered. Neither of them gave a thought to anyone else, just what pleased them (and only each one individually - not even in terms of being a couple). The hero was planning to once again abandon his siblings to the hellish life they couldn't escape so he could go to Scotland and she, who is continually courting being found out as an attress is stunned to learn that her cousin wouldn't be sent to Bermuda with her in social exile. I didn't get the heroine's hatred of her current life - yes, she was a spinster, but she lived off her cousin's family and her life seemed to be one of a typical regency lady - balls and visiting. She even had her own maid, didn't do anything to contibue to the family or society and yet she felt so put-upon. Two self-centered people get together. Blech.Product details

Heiress Without A Cause Muses of Mayfair #1 Sara Ramsey 9781938312007 Books Reviews
I just completed the entire Muses of Mayfair series and have decided that this first book is my favorite.
Once you have read as many historical romances as I have, it is refreshing to come across one with a unique twist. I love that both of the main characters are unconventional in different ways--but not the usual tortured-soul-brooding-wounded sort of way.
Madeline has fire and a passion for the stage. Unfortunately, in her time, gently bred women didn't dare do such a thing. Actresses and mistresses/harlots were one and the same. Before she gives in to a miserable life as a spinster, she dares to masquerade as a French actress and is met with hoardes of adoring fans. She's fantastic! But to continue would risk ruin of both herself and her family.
Ferguson is a wonderful mix of rake, gentleman, and lonely soul. Part Scot, part English, he doesn't seem to really fit either place. When he feels strongly about something, though, he throws himself in with no holds barred.
This book has funny moments, tender scenes, and some beautiful love scenes. Great read--highly recommended.
So, I really don't like leaving negative reviews for books I didn't finish. So, please take this with that grain of salt in mind...
I knew very early in the book that I wouldn't be able to finish. The hero and heroine's first meeting was completely unrealistic. Nothing about her response to his request to dance made sense. That scene was portent in that the rest of the book (that I managed to get through) read the same way. As other reviewers have said, these characters were both so selfish and self centered, that I couldn't develop an interest in what was going to happen to them. It was free, so I won't give it the ONE star I would have if I had spent money on it. But, I won't be venturing back to finish this book. Unfortunately, this was my first novel by this author and it will be my last.
It's reasonably well written but since I could not build very much sympathy or liking for the two main characters, I found Heiress Without a Cause (dopey, unenlightening title, BTW) more of a chore to read rather than a pleasure. I felt slightly more sympathy toward Lady Madeline's antics given the devastation of her background, but as for Ferguson, I tired of his incessant references to his poor relationship to his father as excuse for his actions. As a man in his mid 30s, he needed to grow up a lot faster than his did over the course of this book. Finally, all of the talk of this or that causing scandal among the 'ton' wearied me. Yes, I am fully aware of the proprieties of the Regency Era, but given the actions of the two main protagonists, it appeared they were more interested in talking about propriety than living it.
Bottom line I was more bored than entertained.
Where do I start? Bad plot unrealistic and boring. Characters Hero was basically a whiner. Didn't want to be a Duke. Didn't want the responsibility of his younger sisters. Just wanted to run away to Scotland and leave it all behind. Poor baby! Heroine Orphaned at age 8 when parents were killed in the French Revolution but taken in by her Aunt and raised lovingly in English society. But she was BORED. So bored that she became an stage actress in Seven Dials, one of the most notorious slums in London. Yes, this plot is totally realistic. I especially loved it when she becomes the Hero's mistress so that no one will suspect that she is actually a society miss. Hmmm. I had to do a lot of skimming to finish the book and it is now deleted from my .
