Since I had lived in Jeong-dong (then called "Chong-dong" )some twenty years ago, I was curious to read this book about my old neighborhood. Obviously, a number of things have changed, but the historical notes on the still existing sites were interesting and, for the most part, spot on. For anyone interested in the early history of Korea's opening to the world and the period just prior to the Japanese colonial era, this book is an excellent resource. It is much more than a guidebook, but, to read it without any familiarity with the neighborhood or without the opportunity to explore Jeong-dong in person, might make it less useful. For anyone living or visiting in Seoul who has an interest in history, however, I recommend it.Product details

This is a touching and highly evocative account of a historic district in Seoul. The author's love of all things Korean comes through clearly as he charmingly relates a full day' stroll along Jeong Dong. If you have a passion for old Asia and traditional Korean culture, this book deserves to be on a shelf in your library.
