"Music plays. Dad appears. I walk with him, eyes fastened to the floor. When I look up, something is very wrong. There are three grooms."

This is the story of Quinn - born Prudence Quinn O'Malley - a confused young Manhattan attorney who loses her father on that tragic September morning that changed everything. Now, at an existential crossroads in her life, Quinn must confront impossible questions about commitment and career, love and loss. Her idealistic beau desperately wants a wedding, and whisks her away to Paris just to propose. But then Quinn has a dream featuring judges and handcuffs and Nietzsche and Britney...and far too many grooms. Suddenly, her future isn't so clear. Quinn's world has become a minefield of men - some living, some gone, and traversing it safely is going to take a lot more than numerous glasses of pinot grigio.

Life After Yes is a blisteringly honest, thoroughly modern tale of life and love in chaos, marking the arrival of a truly exciting new voice in contemporary fiction.

Life After Yes (Audible Audio Edition) Aidan Donnelly Rowley Renee Chambliss Audible Studios Books

Life After Yes is thought proviking debut novel by Aidan Donnelley Rowley. The story opens with the main character, Prudence "Quinn" O'Malley and a dream she has right after saying "yes" to a marriage proposal from her long time boyfriend, Sage. I love this story as I felt that Quinn, while flawed, was someone I could relate to. The setting of the book is New York City, just after 9/11 where Quinn lost her father with whom she was very close. Both Quinn and Sage have high powered successful careers, and Quinn has a slight addiction to her BlackBerry.

Quinn is working through so many different emotions, grief from losing her father, left over feelings from a past relationship, and a fear of committment. She is definately a flawed character but that didn't keep me from liking her or from cheering her on while she worked through her demons as she got closer to the the time to say "I do".

I got just enough teases about the "ex" (also her first) to wonder if Quinn was making a mistake by marrying Sage. But Sage does seem to have the patience of a saint as he supports Quinn while she works through her issues and lets go of her childhood love and is ready to move onto her adult life and relationships.

I highly reccommend "Life After Yes". It was a beautifully told story of a flawed character that makes the reader think about their own past mistakes.

Life After Yes (Audible Audio Edition) Aidan Donnelly Rowley Renee Chambliss Audible Studios Books Reviews

Aidan's characters are deep and flawed and beautiful in their imperfections; her settings are nuanced and shaded and bloom in technicolor through her writing. That she is a native Manhattanite comes through loud and clear, and the love with which she writes about post-9/11 New York City is evident in both the characters and her descriptions.

Where Aidan really shines is in her drawings of relationships and in her subtle questions about those relationships -- about how we dance with the people in our lives emotionally mothers and daughters, mothers-in-law and their sons, romantic partners, exes, best friends. Life After Yes depicts a world in which people are neither good nor bad, but many shades of gray, on many different levels. She writes about forgiveness and blame, doubts and assurances, joy and grief. She writes about life. That she so clearly lives it with vigor and thought comes through not only in her blog ([...]), but in her novel.

This story is fun and engaging -- a perfect summer read that will leave you thinking. Not too heavy for the beach, but deeper and edgier than you might expect. A great rookie novel for Aidan Donnelley Rowley!
Aidan Donnelly Rowley has written a book that both delighted and surprised me. I read it in only two sittings - pouring through the pages; waiting to see her protagonist move through past, present, and fears of future. Through dreams and day-to-day realities. Through relationship with self, family, friends, work and coworkers, love.

Quinn's story is different than mine, but Aidan's brilliant writing allowed me to recognize that the story WAS mine; indeed, all of ours'. Full of the things we all face, but work (consciously and unconsciously) to ignore grief, ambivalence, confusion, fear, and sometimes even love.

My favorite part was the ending - a poignant series of pages that were full-to-the-brim with questions, reflections, and truths we all know - but often won't speak out loud. Rather than tidy them up and sweep them into a happy ending, Aidan (and Quinn) invited me profoundly into a space that denied neither reality or hope. In fact, they invited me into my own life.

An excellent read. Worthwhile. Highly recommended. Can't wait to read what Aidan writes next!
LIFE AFTER YES is not afraid to portray (without pity) the less glamorous side of being a single woman who's about to get married. The internal conflicts the main character experiences are vivid and real. The interpersonal conflicts are also palpable. Still, this novel takes the reader on a journey they may relate to but not predict. Sometimes it's hard to see you may have gotten more from you mom than you realized. Being a grown woman doesn't mean you don't think about what your father thinks of you...particularly when he's not around to ask.

I agree with my fellow reviewer that it is a marvel how a book comes to you at just the right time. Women dealing with real struggles to figure out who they are, what they want and the substance (and substances) it takes to feel authentic doesn't always have a simple or formulaic path. If you are tempted to lump this into "chick lit" and dismiss it, I would encourage you to 1. Read it anyway and 2. Reconsider any concept of "chick lit" as substandard.

LIFE AFTER YES leaves doors open. Everything isn't tied up in a pretty package, yet this is what I actually feel makes it beautiful. The novel depicts when it is worth struggling against inertia and when we are just scared.

The writing style is lovely, and, as I have shared with the author herself, I predict I am a fan for life. Can't wait to read what she comes up with next.
